Every cinematic hero has some sort of superpower- and Captain America is no exception.

In fact, his superhero strength and abilities might be the result of an experiment that altered his DNA to make him the perfect human specimen. A true patriot, he believes in a world bound by justice and equality, but also trusts in people's ability to do what’s right when given a chance. He spends much of his time as the leader of The Avengers fighting for freedom alongside heroes such as Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Widow.

A significant portion of Captain America's history has been adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most notably in:

Captain America (1991)

The Avengers (2012)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

and Captain America: Civil War (2016)

In the comics, Steve Rogers was born in New York City in the 20s. His frail body meant he was rejected by the army when he tried to enlist to fight in WWII, so he tried again and got into a scientific experiment that would turn him into a "perfect human" - Captain America.

The experiment succeeded, and he was given the super-soldier serum S.S 3-14, which gave him strength and speed on par with the world's strongest men. Rogers also underwent extensive combat training at a facility in Washington D.C before being sent out to Europe, where he joined up with allied forces as a soldier.

Captain America originally fought alongside The Invaders from his native New York alongside side agents like Bucky Barnes, Toro and Namor the Submariner. Unfortunately, Namor was killed during a mission in Europe and Rogers fought back against his old foe Baron Zemo who was thought to be responsible. The two men faced off on the roof of a skyscraper, where they jousted with each other until Thor arrived and hit Rogers with his hammer, knocking him down. He was then taken into custody by the FBI.

Over the years, Captain America returned as 'The Winter Soldier', an agent of HYDRA who now fights for S.H.I.E.L.D., which he feels is a more efficient organization than SHIELD and is independent from the Government itself (as seen in Civil War).

Captain America's allies include Bucky Barnes - who was set to be his successor after WWII, Black Widow, Falcon, Sharon Carter and the Winter Soldier. His enemies include The Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Arnim Zola and his own twin set to kill him: The Serpent.

Captain America uses a specially designed shield made of "vibranium" - the hardest metal in the world. He can also call upon an army of drones called "The Avengers".

Take a look at some of Captain America's appearances in Marvel Cinematic Universe:

His shield first appears when he is chasing Loki in The Avengers and saves the team during battle with HYDRA in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

He throws it at an exploding missile in Captain America: Civil War and uses it to stop a tank in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The shield's current whereabouts are unknown, but it is presumed to have been destroyed at the end of Ant-Man.

Some of Captain America's greatest enemies and their continuities are listed below:

Red Skull / Johann Schmidt (Marvel Comics) - Red Skull is the Nazi leader who is responsible for creating the Super Soldier program and becoming allied with Hydra which he leads after WWII (Captain America 3 / Avengers 2). He maintains his identity by using his helmet with the face of his deceased brother. Hitler's cousin, Fritz Streitenberger.
